For mechanical design & drafting I've used CAD/Draw4 by TommySoftware for many years. I have now switched to TurboCAD. I bought version 8 after trying out the free learning edition (version 4). I found TurboCAD easier to use than CAD/Draw4 and it has all of the features that I use from CAD/Draw4. I haven't used version 8 for any real work yet because I've found v8 no easier to use and I haven't found any useful new features in v8. TurboCAD pulled the plug on the learning edition but thanks to FreeCAD.com the link above will still get it for you.
